Archbishop Prakash Mallavarapu Leaves a Lasting Mark on the Church in India

Archbishop Prakash Mallavarapu will be remembered not only as a devoted pastor but also as a visionary Church leader whose influence extended far beyond the dioceses he served. Over more than two decades of episcopal ministry, Archbishop Prakash provided steady and compassionate leadership to three ecclesiastical jurisdictions. He shepherded the Diocese of Cuddapah from 1998 to 2002, guided the Diocese of Vijayawada from 2002 to 2012, and later led the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam from 2012 until his retirement in 2024.

At the national level, Archbishop Prakash emerged as one of the most respected voices among the bishops of India. He was the Secretary General of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) from 2005 to 2011. Known for his thoughtful reflections and practical wisdom, he commanded respect across regions and generations. His observations during Executive Committee meetings and Plenary Assemblies were often received with particular attention, drawing upon his extensive experience in pastoral ministry, administration, and ecclesial leadership.

Those who worked closely with him recall his unwavering commitment to strengthening the mission of the Latin Church in India. He consistently emphasized that the Church’s identity and mission must be rooted in service to the poor, the marginalized, Dalits, and tribal communities. He believed that the realities faced by these communities demanded stronger pastoral structures, effective ministries, and a renewed commitment to evangelization and social transformation.

One of the defining achievements of his leadership at the CCBI was the establishment of the Commissions for Youth, Laity and Women in 2008. The decision marked a significant milestone in the life of the Conference and reflected his conviction that the future vitality of the Church depended upon the active participation of young people, lay faithful, and women. Archbishop Prakash often spoke about the challenges involved in bringing these commissions into existence. He understood that lasting renewal requires patience, perseverance, and long-term vision.

For him, these commissions were not merely administrative bodies but essential instruments for nurturing leadership, promoting participation, and strengthening the mission of the Church at every level. He firmly believed that the CCBI carried a unique responsibility to accompany young people, support lay leadership, and create greater opportunities for women to contribute to the life and mission of the Church.

Archbishop Prakash Mallavarapu leaves behind a legacy marked by pastoral zeal, institutional foresight, and a deep concern for those on the margins of society. He was a bishop who combined administrative competence with a pastor’s heart, a leader who looked beyond immediate challenges and worked tirelessly for the future of the Church. His life remains an enduring testimony to faithful service, courageous leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the Gospel mission.
