Simla-Chandigarh Diocese Unveils Pastoral Plan, Bishop Calls for Active Synodal Mission

Chandigarh, May 14, 2026 — In a significant step towards deepening its pastoral vision, the Diocese of Simla-Chandigarh officially launched its Diocesan Pastoral Plan on May 13 at Christ the King Cathedral, Chandigarh, during the twin celebrations marking the first Episcopal Anniversary and the Sacerdotal Silver Jubilee of Bishop Sahaya Thatheus Thomas.

The solemn occasion drew the presence of Bishop Gerald John Mathias, along with a large gathering of clergy, religious, and lay faithful from across the diocese.

Releasing the document, Bishop Thomas described the Pastoral Plan as a roadmap for the local Church and urged the faithful to ensure that it does not remain merely “a book on the shelf.” Instead, he called for its active implementation at every level of Church life — from parishes to deaneries and diocesan structures. Emphasising the call to be a synodal Church, he invited all to journey together in a spirit of communion, participation, and mission.

The Bishop expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the formulation of the plan, with special acknowledgment of the guidance provided by Fr. Joe Xavier SJ and Fr. Charles Leon in shaping the document.

In his address, Bishop Mathias commended the diocese for taking concrete steps to strengthen its synodal journey. He encouraged the faithful to persevere with renewed zeal in their mission of evangelisation and pastoral renewal.

The occasion also witnessed the launch of a new diocesan website www.dppscd.org designed to support the monitoring and evaluation of various pastoral initiatives undertaken by diocesan commissions. The platform was developed by Mr. Happy Shergill, whose efforts were appreciated for their efficiency and creativity.

The release of the Pastoral Plan marks a renewed commitment by the Diocese of Simla-Chandigarh to foster a participatory and mission-oriented Church, aligned with the broader vision of synodality in the universal Church.
