CBCI Condemns Killing of Baptist Leaders in Manipur, Calls for Peace and Reconciliation

New Delhi, May 13, 2026: The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) has strongly condemned the killing of Baptist church leaders in violence-stricken Manipur, describing the attack as a “deeply disturbing” act that further wounds a region already reeling under prolonged unrest.

In a statement issued on May 13, the bishops expressed profound grief over the ambush in Kangpokpi district, where two vehicles carrying leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association were attacked between Kotzim and Kotlen villages. The incident claimed several lives and left others seriously injured, intensifying fear and anguish among local communities.

Calling the victims “servants of hope and faith,” the CBCI said the killing of religious leaders underscores the alarming erosion of peace and security in the region. The bishops noted that such acts of violence not only target individuals but also undermine the moral and social fabric of society.

Unequivocally condemning the attack, the CBCI stressed that violence only deepens divisions, prolongs suffering, and weakens the bonds that sustain communal harmony. The bishops echoed the appeal of Most Rev. Dr. Linus Neli, urging all communities to renounce violence and retaliation.

Instead, the Church called for a renewed commitment to dialogue, forgiveness, and reconciliation, encouraging all stakeholders to embrace restraint and work toward peaceful coexistence rooted in Gospel values.

The bishops also appealed to civil authorities to act with wisdom, fairness, and sensitivity in addressing the crisis, expressing hope that trust and stability may gradually be restored in the troubled state.

Expressing closeness to those affected, the CBCI assured prayerful solidarity with the bereaved families and the injured. The bishops commended the souls of the victims to God’s mercy and prayed for comfort for grieving families and healing for those wounded in the attack.

The latest tragedy once again highlights the fragile situation in Manipur, where cycles of violence and mistrust continue to disrupt normal life. Religious leaders across denominations have repeatedly underscored the urgent need for peacebuilding and reconciliation.

In its message, the CBCI reiterated that faith communities must remain instruments of peace, compassion, and unity, especially in times of crisis. As Manipur mourns yet another loss, the Church called on all people of goodwill to reject hatred and choose the path of healing and reconciliation.
