Imphal Archbishop Appeals for Peace After Ambush on Baptist Church Leaders in Manipur

May 13, 2026: Following the tragic ambush on two vehicles carrying church leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association (TBA) between Kotzim and Kotlen villages in Kangpokpi district, Manipur, on May 13, Archbishop Linus Neli of Imphal, appealed for peace and calm in the violence-hit state.

Expressing “deep sorrow and a heavy heart” over the incident, the Archbishop stated that innocent lives were lost and several others were injured. He said the attack had caused “immense anguish” and further deepened the suffering and uncertainty already prevailing in the state.

He strongly condemned the act, describing it as a “heinous act committed against religious leaders who have remained a source of hope and strength during these difficult times of social unrest.”

Referring to the continuing situation in Manipur, Archbishop Neli said the state was witnessing “fresh and sporadic violence in different parts,” which was further deepening the pain faced by its people. He noted that such incidents highlighted the urgent need to uphold the sanctity of human life and renew commitment to peace and reconciliation.

“Violence only deepens wounds, prolongs suffering, and weakens the bonds that unite communities,” the statement said, adding that the people of Manipur had already endured “immense pain, loss and suffering,” while there was a growing longing for healing, understanding, and a return to normalcy.

The Archbishop appealed to all concerned to refrain from violence and retaliation and instead embrace “dialogue, forgiveness, reconciliation, restraint, and peaceful coexistence.” He also urged authorities and responsible institutions to act “with wisdom, fairness, and sensitivity” so that peace with justice and confidence among communities could be restored.

Expressing solidarity with the bereaved families, Archbishop Neli said prayers were being offered for the victims and their families. “We commend the souls of the innocent victims into his loving embrace,” the statement read.
