Vatican City, April 12, 2026 — Pope Leo XIV has stressed the moral obligation to protect civilians from the devastating effects of war, as he addressed the faithful following the Regina Caeli in St. Peter’s Square.
Highlighting the principle of humanity recognised in international law, the Pope called for urgent action to safeguard civilian populations caught in conflict.
Turning to global crises, he expressed particular concern for those affected by the war in Ukraine, urging that international attention to the ongoing tragedy must not diminish. He prayed that the light of Christ would bring comfort to those suffering and strengthen hope for peace.
Addressing the situation in Lebanon, Pope Leo XIV spoke of the “days of sorrow and fear” endured by its people, while also acknowledging their enduring hope. He called on all parties involved to declare a ceasefire and seek an immediate peaceful resolution.
The Pope also drew attention to the continuing conflict in Sudan, marking three years since the outbreak of what he described as a “bloody” war. He lamented the suffering of innocent civilians and renewed his appeal to those involved to lay down their arms and begin sincere dialogue without preconditions to end the “fratricidal war”.
Extending his message of peace, the Pope conveyed greetings to the Eastern Churches celebrating Easter according to the Julian calendar, expressing unity in faith in the Risen Lord.
He concluded by asking for prayers for his upcoming Apostolic Journey to Africa, beginning on April 13, which will include visits to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
Pope Leo XIV reiterated his call for peace, urging the global community to act with responsibility and compassion in the face of ongoing conflicts.
