Catechism Summer Camp in Shimoga Fosters Faith and Holistic Growth Among Children

Shimoga, Karnataka, April 12, 2026 — A vibrant six-day Catechism Summer Camp at Our Lady of Vailankanni Church in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Shimoga brought together 70 children from LKG to Class 8, offering a rich blend of spiritual formation and personality development from April 6 to 11.

Organised around the theme “Catechism of the Catholic Church and Personality Development,” the camp featured structured and engaging sessions aimed at nurturing both faith and personal growth. Resource persons including Sr. Saritha, Dr. Sr. Angeline, Dr. Sr. Sunitha, Sr. S. Nirmala, Angel, and Theresa Mascarenhas led sessions with clarity and dedication, creating an interactive learning environment for the young participants.

A key highlight was a reflective session on the Holy Eucharist conducted by Fr. Steevan D’Sa, who guided the children toward a deeper understanding and reverence for the sacrament.

In a gesture that embodied Christian compassion, the children visited an old age home on April 9, where they spent time with the elderly, presented a cultural programme, and shared moments of warmth and affection. The interaction proved deeply moving for both the residents and the young visitors.

The camp was inaugurated by Mrs. Lilly alongside the parish priest, and concluded in the presence of Dr. Sr. Regina Suares, Sr. Bernedine, and Fr. Prem Cutinho.

The programme was meticulously planned and coordinated by Sr. Theresa Mascarenhas, whose leadership ensured its smooth execution and lasting impact. She was supported by Mrs. Eliza Lawrence and a committed team of animators, including Mrs. Celine Baptist, Reshma, Celine Miranda, Amudha, Theresa Kowsalya, Rose Mary, Preethi, Jessy Gonsalves, and Miss Priya.

Expressing gratitude, Fr. Steevan D’Sa acknowledged the support and service of the Sisters of St Charles Borromeo in organising the camp.

The event concluded with a lively cultural programme showcasing the children’s talents, followed by the distribution of prizes. Overall, the initiative offered a meaningful platform for young participants to grow in faith, values, and confidence, reflecting the Church’s commitment to holistic formation.
