How Faith Helped Transform a Village Once Known for Alcoholism in Assam

Moran, Assam, July 25, 2026: For years, Bagdum village under Moran Parish in the diocese of Dibrugarh carried a difficult reputation. Alcoholism was widespread, irregular marriages were common, and many children showed little interest in education. Teachers often had to visit homes to persuade students to attend school. Today, however, the village tells a very different story—one of hope, faith and transformation brought about through a committed Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC).

A Village Searching for Hope

The journey of change began quietly. Regular visits to Bagdum initially focused on helping the community complete their church. But God was preparing something much greater.

In 2022, St. Peter's BEC was established under the leadership of Mr. Andreas Jatarma and his wife, Mrs. Paulina. Although the village has only one BEC group, its members committed themselves wholeheartedly to prayer, Gospel sharing and walking together as one faith community.

Faith That Reached Every Home

The BEC soon became much more than a gathering for prayer. Members regularly visited families, encouraged children and young people to take their education seriously, and accompanied them with care and confidence.

The students also embraced the spirit of the BEC. They actively participated in the meetings and even encouraged their parents to refrain from drinking during the crucial examination period, creating a more supportive environment for study.

Slowly, the atmosphere in the village began to change.

A Historic Achievement

The transformation became visible when four students from Bagdum appeared for the recent matriculation examination—the first time such a milestone had been achieved by the village.

Three students from the Assamese medium—Ms. Lolita Munda, Ms. Leena Barla and Ms. Christina Munda—successfully passed the examination, with two securing First Division and one obtaining the Second Division. One other student received a compartment.

For a village that had long been viewed with scepticism, the results brought joy not only to the community but also surprised neighbouring villages.

When Faith Becomes Action

Many had quietly wondered whether anything good could come from Bagdum, echoing the question found in the Gospel: "Can anything good come from Nazareth?"

The answer came through the lives of ordinary people who chose to live their faith together.

The success was not accidental. It was the fruit of regular prayer, Gospel sharing, patient accompaniment and the collective responsibility nurtured within the Basic Ecclesial Community. Through these simple yet faithful efforts, hope replaced discouragement and confidence began to flourish among families and young people.

A Witness to the Power of BEC

Today, Bagdum village stands as a living witness to the transformative mission of the Basic Ecclesial Community. Its story reminds us that lasting change often begins quietly—through small groups of believers who pray together, encourage one another and faithfully put the Gospel into action.
