Kerala, October 27, 2025: In an exclusive conversation with Catholic Connect, Sister Sabina, a Kerala-based nun and former national-level hurdler, opened up about her inspiring life journey, her deep faith in God, and the passion that led her back to the track — where she stunned spectators by winning first place in the 55-plus hurdles category at the State Masters Athletics Meet.
Running barefoot and dressed in her religious habit, the 56-year-old athlete captivated the crowd as she sprinted past her competitors, proving that age and attire are no barriers when faith and determination unite.
Sister Sabina, a member of the Adoration Congregation, has devoted her life to both faith and physical education. A native of Ennappara in Kerala’s Kasaragod district, she moved to Wayanad in 1993, where she now serves at the Dwarka Provincial House’s worship centre. She is currently working as a physical education teacher at Dwarka AUP School, where she inspires generations of students through her commitment to discipline and fitness. A former national-level hurdler during her teenage and college years, Sister Sabina decided to return to competition one last time before her retirement in March 2026, marking her participation at the State Masters Athletics Meet as a fitting culmination of her lifelong passion for sport and faith.
A Lifelong Passion Ignited in Childhood
Recalling herer early years, Sister Sabina said her love for athletics began in Class 4, when her physical education teacher, Luka Sir, recognised her potential and encouraged her to compete. “He was the one who turned me more towards this field and motivated me to take part in competitions,” she shared.
Her journey took off when she represented the Kannur division while studying in Class 8, later advancing to the national level. She went on to compete in inter-varsity meets while studying at Pallakad Mercy School, where her talent continued to shine.
“I’ve been in athletics since my childhood,” she said with a smile. “Those days shaped who I am today — disciplined, determined, and faithful.”
Faith Over Fear: Running Barefoot in Her Habit
What drew the crowd’s admiration was not only her speed but her confidence to compete barefoot in her nun’s habit — an unusual choice for an athletic event. When asked how she managed it, she simply replied, “Whatever we want to do, we must have faith in God. He will give the strength and courage to do it. It’s the power of the Holy Spirit that enables us. Without God’s help, we would be pulled back from everything — that’s my belief and my confidence.”
Her humility and deep sense of devotion resonated strongly with those who witnessed her run. For Sister Sabina, this race was more than just a competition — it was a testament to perseverance and divine grace.
A Teacher Who Inspires Generations
With over two decades of teaching experience, Sister Sabina has mentored countless students who went on to represent the national team, railways, and police departments. “Many of my students still call me to share their achievements,” she said proudly.
But she also voiced concern over today’s youth. “The younger generation often falls into the influence of drugs. Sports can change that. When you focus on athletics and studies, your mind stays disciplined and clear. You’ll be happy, focused, and strong — spiritually, emotionally, and physically.”
A Race to Remember
Reflecting on her final race before retirement, Sister Sabina said it was a deeply personal moment. “As I’m retiring next March, I wished to do this one last time. When I looked back, I was happy that I got that opportunity and took it. I’m grateful to God for everything.”
Her victory — achieved with bare feet, a determined heart, and unshakable faith — stands as a powerful reminder that true strength lies in perseverance and belief. As she prepares to hang up her spikes, Sister Sabina leaves behind not just a legacy of athletic excellence but a message of faith-driven resilience for generations to come.
