‘Vriksha Bandhan’ Adds Environmental Message to Raksha Bandhan at Amritsar School

Amritsar, August 27, 2026: St Joseph’s School, Bharariwal, Amritsar, gave a distinctive environmental dimension to Raksha Bandhan on Thursday by introducing the concept of “Vriksha Bandhan” — a bond of protection with trees — linking the traditional festival of sibling love with a collective commitment to protect nature.

The celebration, organised on the school grounds, sought to encourage students to look beyond the conventional understanding of Raksha Bandhan and recognise trees as partners in sustaining life and protecting the environment. Through the initiative, the school presented the tying of the rakhi as a symbolic pledge to care for trees and strengthen the bond between human beings and nature.

The programme began with teachers and students tying rakhis on the hands of Principal Fr Suresh Mathew, marking the spirit of affection, respect and protection associated with the festival.

A grand cultural programme followed, with students participating enthusiastically in various activities. A skit presented by the children highlighted the meaning and significance of Raksha Bandhan, while a series of dance performances added colour and energy to the celebration.

Addressing the gathering, Fr Suresh Mathew spoke about the sacred bond between brothers and sisters, describing it as a relationship marked by innocent and pure love. He encouraged the students to expand the meaning of such love beyond family relationships and extend the same spirit of affection, respect and care towards their classmates and friends.

He also appreciated the teachers and students for giving Raksha Bandhan an environmental focus through Vriksha Bandhan. He said that the gesture of tying rakhis to trees could serve as a reminder of the responsibility of every individual to protect and nurture the natural environment.

The celebration thus combined cultural tradition with environmental awareness, encouraging students to see the rakhi not merely as a symbol of sibling affection but also as a pledge of protection towards trees and the wider environment.

The initiative was aimed at nurturing environmental responsibility among children by connecting a familiar cultural celebration with the need to care for nature. Through Vriksha Bandhan, the school sought to convey that protecting trees is also a way of protecting life and ensuring a healthier future for coming generations.
