Vatican City, September 29, 2026: The Dicastery for Communication has announced “A New Gaze: Paying Attention in the Age of Clickbait” as the theme for the 61st World Communications Day, inviting Christians to rediscover attentive, loving and responsible communication in an age dominated by the rapid flow of digital content.
2027 World Communications Day theme
The theme was announced on the feast of St Gabriel the Archangel and calls for a renewed way of looking at others, grounded in love, truth and the dignity of every person.
Rediscovering the value of attention
In its statement, the Dicastery invites Christians to embrace “a conversion of our gaze: to look again, with attention and with love.”
It observes that the attention economy, driven by the competition for brief moments of interest amid the constant stream of content, is transforming not only people's cognitive abilities but also the depth of interpersonal communication.
Only by paying attention to others with love can people see the world, others and themselves as Christ sees them: “called by name and loved.”
The statement adds that communication changes when people choose to encounter others rather than judge them.
Communication beyond clicks and reactions
The Dicastery warns that digital culture encourages rapid reactions and superficial relationships, often leaving little room for genuine attention.
“Yet attention is a precious form of generosity: the word ‘attention’ comes from ad-tendere—to reach out toward the other and toward the truth,” the statement says.
It describes attention as both a gift and a way of seeing, inspired by Jesus, who saw others and allowed Himself to be touched by their experiences.
Rather than seeking merely to capture people's attention, the Dicastery calls for communication that safeguards attention as a precious resource for relationships.
The theme particularly invites Christians to respond to the culture of clickbait by rediscovering a healthier way of attending to one another.
Communication rooted in the Gospel
The statement emphasises that Christian communication must go beyond the exchange of words and involve the whole person. “Communication is not just about words,” the Dicastery concludes. “It involves the entire person and asks us to look, hear, and feel again in order to answer Christ’s call.”
The theme invites Catholics and communicators to place greater emphasis on listening, empathy and genuine human encounters in their personal interactions and digital engagement.
The 61st World Communications Day will be celebrated in many parts of the world, including the United States, England and Wales, France, Spain, Poland and Italy, on May 9, 2027. The date may vary in other countries, according to the respective national Bishops’ Conferences.
