Why Does a Burning Bush Appear in Marian Art?

September 29, 2026: Have you ever noticed a burning bush in an image of the Virgin Mary? The image may seem surprising: what does an episode from Moses’ life have to do with Mary? In Christian tradition, the bush became a way of expressing the mystery of the Incarnation and Mary’s virginal motherhood.

The Burning Bush of Moses

In Exodus, Moses is tending his father-in-law’s flock when he comes to Horeb, the mountain of God. The angel of the Lord appears to him in a flame within a bush. Moses sees that the bush is burning but is not consumed. When he approaches, God calls to him and tells him to remove his sandals, because the ground is holy. The episode marks God’s revelation to Moses and the beginning of his mission to lead Israel out of Egypt.

Why Is the Bush Connected with Mary?

The connection is a Christian reading of the biblical scene, not the literal subject of the Exodus account. The Catechism makes the Marian interpretation explicit: “She is the burning bush of the definitive theophany.” It explains that in Mary, the Holy Spirit makes the Son of the Father visible in the humility of his human flesh.

The bush burning without being consumed can therefore suggest God’s presence revealed in Mary, who conceived Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit and remained a virgin. This is a traditional symbolic interpretation, not a separate definition of doctrine. “Virginal motherhood” is a helpful phrase here; it should not be confused with the Immaculate Conception, which refers to Mary’s own conception.

From Scripture to Marian Art

Artists can use the image to point toward the Incarnation: the fire suggests divine presence, while the unconsumed bush evokes Mary’s virginal motherhood. Christian writers have also applied the burning-bush image to Christ and other mysteries, so its meaning is not limited to Marian art.

An “Unburnt Bush” image is also found in Eastern Christian iconography. It is one particular iconographic tradition, not a feature of every Eastern image of Mary. The broader symbolism, however, is shared: the bush recalls the God who revealed himself to Moses, while its Marian use directs the viewer to the Son whom Mary bore.

So when you see a burning bush beside or around Mary, it is a visual meditation on the Incarnation: God’s presence made visible in Christ, born of the Virgin.
