US Ambassador Sergio Gor Visits Kolkata, Honours Mother Teresa’s Legacy

Kolkata , May 17, 2026: During his first official visit to Kolkata since assuming office as the United States Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor explored some of the city’s most cherished cultural and spiritual landmarks, highlighting the enduring connection between faith, service, and diplomacy.

The ambassador visited the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa, where he joined the Sisters in prayer and reflected on the saint’s enduring legacy of compassion and service to the poor.

Sharing his experience on social media, Gor wrote, “Hello Kolkata! Honored to visit the Missionaries of Charity, pray with the Sisters, and reflect on the legacy of Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa’s Christian faith and life of service continue to inspire millions of people across continents.”

The visit carried special significance as it marked the ambassador’s first engagement with Kolkata after officially taking charge as US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy to South and Central Asia in January 2026. His stop at the Missionaries of Charity underscored the continuing global influence of Mother Teresa’s humanitarian mission, which remains deeply rooted in the heart of the City of Joy.

Gor also acknowledged the historic importance of the US diplomatic presence in eastern India. Referring to the United States Consulate General Kolkata, he noted that it is America’s second-oldest diplomatic post in the world and continues to play an important role in strengthening ties across eastern and northeastern India.

“The US Consulate plays a vital role in strengthening ties across India, including the growing east and northeast. Glad to engage with our Consulate community in Kolkata and get to know the City of Joy,” he wrote.

Later in the day, the ambassador, accompanied by Kathy Giles-Diaz, visited the iconic Victoria Memorial Hall, where the delegation explored the museum galleries and experienced the city’s rich historical heritage.

Kolkata, long celebrated for its blend of spirituality, culture, literature, and history, offered the ambassador a glimpse into the soul of eastern India. From moments of silent prayer at the Missionaries of Charity to the grandeur of Victoria Memorial, the visit reflected both diplomatic engagement and cultural appreciation.

Gor was confirmed by the US Senate as Ambassador to India in October 2025 and formally assumed office on January 14, 2026. His Kolkata visit is being seen as an important gesture towards strengthening Indo-US relations while recognising the city’s unique role in shaping humanitarian and cultural conversations across the world.
