Vatican City, May 17, 2026: Pope Leo XIV said the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord remains deeply relevant for Christians today, stressing that Christ continues to draw humanity towards full communion with God and calls people to build peace and unity in the world.
Addressing around 20,000 pilgrims and visitors gathered in St. Peter’s Square during the Regina Caeli prayer on Sunday, the Pope reflected on the significance of the Lord’s Ascension, which was being celebrated in many countries around the world.
Pope Leo explained that Christ’s entire life represented “a movement of ascent”, through which Jesus embraced humanity and elevated it from sin towards redemption. He said Christ brought light, forgiveness and hope where darkness, injustice and despair had once prevailed.
The Pope noted that the Ascension is not a distant historical event but a living reality for believers today. He emphasised that Christians remain united with Christ and are drawn towards “full communion with the Father”.
He also said the mystery of the Ascension calls believers to widen their horizons and shape their thoughts, actions and attitudes according to “the measure of God’s heart”.
Highlighting examples of faith-filled living, Pope Leo pointed to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints as models of Christian life. He also recalled Pope Francis’ description of the “saints next door” — ordinary people such as parents, grandparents and others who strive to live the Gospel with sincerity and dedication in their daily lives.
Concluding his reflection, Pope Leo encouraged the faithful to support one another through prayer and to focus on what is true, just and worthy of love. He said the divine life received through Baptism should continue to grow and bear “the precious fruits of communion and peace” throughout the world.
