Umrale Parish Begins Nine-Day Novena to St. Francis

Vasai, September 26, 2026: St. Joseph Church, Umrale, began its nine-day novena to St. Francis of Assisi on September 25 with a prayerful procession, flag-hoisting ceremony and a large gathering of parishioners.

The opening celebrations began in the evening with a procession of the faithful towards the church, followed by the hoisting of the novena flag by Bishop Thomas D’Souza. Vasai Deputy Mayor Marshal Lopes and members of the parish community joined the ceremony.

The celebration reflected the cultural traditions of the parish, with many faithful participating in traditional attire. The colourful procession and strong community participation added a festive character to the opening of the novena.

The parish has chosen “Walking with St. Francis” as the theme for this year’s novena. The nine-day journey will invite the faithful to reflect on the life and spirituality of St. Francis, particularly his witness to simplicity, humility, peace, compassion and care for creation.

The parish youth played a key role in organising and coordinating the opening-day celebrations. The programme was conducted under the guidance of parish priest Fr. Nitin D’Souza OFM Cap., with the support of volunteers and parishioners.

The novena will continue with prayer and reflection centred on the life and mission of St. Francis.
