At the same time, two Portuguese merchants were caught in a violent storm while sailing in the Arabian Sea. Fearing for their lives, they prayed to St. Anthony and vowed that if they survived, they would finance the construction of a church dedicated to him wherever they first reached safety.
Their prayers appeared to be answered when the storm subsided and their vessel safely entered the waters near the Chapora River in Goa. There they encountered Franciscan missionaries seeking support for their planned church. Seeing the meeting as an act of divine providence, the merchants fulfilled their promise and provided the necessary funds.
Construction soon began, but a mysterious obstacle emerged.
According to long-standing local tradition, a giant serpent repeatedly appeared at the construction site during the night and destroyed sections of the church's foundation. Morning after morning, workers found their progress undone. Fear spread throughout the village, and many began to believe the project would never be completed.
Determined not to abandon their mission, the priests and villagers turned to prayer. They placed a statue of St Anthony at the site and prayed through the night for protection and guidance.
At dawn, they reportedly discovered the serpent dead and bound by a cord attached to the saint's statue. To the faithful, this was a miraculous intervention by St. Anthony. The destruction ceased immediately, construction continued, and the church was completed around 1630.
