April 15, 2026: The SIGNIS India has issued a strong statement expressing concern and condemnation over recent disparaging remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump against Pope Leo XIV.
In its official communication, SIGNIS India said that comments directed at the Supreme Pontiff “profoundly wound the sentiments of Catholics worldwide,” noting that the faithful revere the Pope as the successor of St. Peter and the visible head of the Church. The organisation emphasised that any affront to the Holy Father is, in effect, a slight against the faith and dignity of millions of believers.
While reaffirming its support for freedom of expression and constructive dialogue in democratic societies, the Catholic media body cautioned that “personal attacks on religious leaders have no place in responsible communication.” It warned that such rhetoric risks undermining mutual respect, weakening interreligious harmony, and eroding the ethical foundations of public discourse.
Highlighting its commitment to truth, dignity, and peace, SIGNIS India called on political leaders, media professionals, and public figures to exercise restraint and responsibility in their communication, avoiding language that demeans the religious convictions of others.
The statement also reaffirmed the organisation’s “filial loyalty and communion” with Pope Leo XIV, offering prayerful support for his ministry, which it described as rooted in peace, justice, and compassion, particularly for the poor and vulnerable.
Urging a measured and faith-filled response, SIGNIS India encouraged the faithful to respond to such situations not with anger but with prayer—both for the Holy Father and for all those in positions of leadership, that they may be guided by wisdom, truth, and respect.
