SIGNIS India Calls for Ethical Media, Peacebuilding at National Assembly in Jalandhar, Punjab

Jalandhar, April 15, 2026: Expressing concern over rising violence against marginalized communities and the growing misuse of digital media, delegates at the SIGNIS India National Assembly 2026 have called for responsible communication rooted in truth, ethics, and hope.

The four-day assembly, held from April 13 to 16 at the Gianodaya Pastoral Centre in Jalandhar, Punjab brought together around 72 media professionals representing 12 regions of SIGNIS India, a member of the World Catholic Association for Communication. The gathering was convened in response to the message of Pope Francis for World Communications Day 2025 and centered on the theme, “Whispers of Hope: Communicating Peace, Growing Together, Building Futures.”

In a statement released at the conclusion of the assembly, participants voiced “deep concern” over ongoing violence targeting marginalized groups in India, highlighting repeated attacks on Christian minorities and incidents involving the destruction of churches. The delegates also warned against the harmful impact of misinformation, fake news, and explicit digital content, particularly on young people.

“The misuse of media continues to distort reality and influence youth in dangerous ways,” the statement noted, urging greater accountability and ethical responsibility among communicators.

Addressing the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence, the assembly acknowledged its transformative potential but stressed the urgent need for media literacy and ethical content creation. Delegates emphasized the importance of guiding digitally immersed youth to navigate online spaces responsibly and to channel technological tools toward constructive and meaningful engagement.

Reaffirming their commitment to truth and credibility, the participants pledged to counter hostility and misinformation with integrity and a message of hope grounded in social realities. They underscored the role of interreligious dialogue in fostering mutual respect and collaboration, calling it essential for promoting peace and unity in a diverse society.

The statement also highlighted the significant contribution of women in peacebuilding and evangelization, advocating for greater opportunities for women to share their stories of resilience, courage, and faith.

Participants further committed to strengthening storytelling practices within the Church by promoting attentive listening and meaningful communication as expressions of faith. They also resolved to engage responsibly with emerging digital technologies, including AI, while amplifying the voices of marginalized communities.

Looking ahead, the assembly outlined plans to deepen faith formation, encourage lay participation in dialogue, and develop digital safeguarding policies and practical toolkits within Catholic media organizations. Delegates affirmed their intention to promote reliable sources of information and to proclaim the Gospel with renewed conviction.

The SIGNIS India National Assembly concluded with a collective resolve to address the challenges of the digital age and to contribute to building a culture of peace through ethical and hope-filled communication.
