Saint Monica Feast Brings Mothers Together for Prayer and Social Awareness in Gopalpur

Gopalpur, August 31, 2026: The Feast of Saint Monica was celebrated as a special Mother’s Day programme at St. Little Flower Church, Gopalpur, in the Diocese of Purnea, from August 28 to 30, bringing together mothers for prayer, spiritual renewal, social awareness and fellowship despite flood conditions in the region.

The three-day programme included Eucharistic Adoration, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, a seminar on citizens’ rights and duties, prayer and healing, Holy Mass and a cultural programme.

The celebration began on August 28 with Eucharistic Adoration and Confession. Twenty-seven mothers participated despite the difficulties caused by flooding in the area, spending time in prayer and reflection as they prepared for the feast.

On the following day, 98 mothers attended a seminar conducted by Advocate Sr. Celine Thomas, SMI, who serves at the Bhagalpur District Court. Sr. Celine travelled to Gopalpur despite the challenges posed by the flood situation.

Reflecting on the life of Saint Monica, the programme highlighted her perseverance in prayer and her unwavering hope for the conversion of her husband and her son, Saint Augustine. Drawing inspiration from her life, Sr. Celine spoke about the rights and duties of Indian citizens, focusing particularly on issues concerning women, children and families.

During a group activity, participants identified several challenges affecting their villages, including alcohol abuse, child marriage, problems concerning children and difficulties faced by Christian families. The mothers discussed possible responses to these issues and received guidance on approaching the police and relevant government authorities when necessary.

A prayer and healing session led by Sr. Baby, SMI, provided another important moment of the celebration. Several participants shared that they experienced comfort and healing through prayer, while one mother offered a personal testimony.

In his homily, Fr. George Kerketta, Vicar General of the Diocese of Purnea, reflected on Saint Monica’s perseverance in prayer and encouraged mothers to remain steadfast in faith, trusting in God’s grace as they pray for their families.

The celebration was organised under the pastoral leadership of Fr. Steven Kerketta, Parish Priest, with the assistance of Fr. Midhun Paul, Assistant Parish Priest, and the pastoral collaboration of Sr Karuna, SMI, and Sr Baby, SMI.

Despite the difficult flood conditions, the three-day programme offered the participating mothers an opportunity for spiritual renewal, greater awareness of their social and civic responsibilities, and fellowship. The celebration presented Saint Monica as a model of persistent prayer, courage and hope for mothers and families.
