CRI Mangaluru Explores AI’s Role in Religious Life and Mission

Mangaluru, August 30, 2026: The Mangaluru Unit of the Conference of Religious India (CRI) organised a workshop on the ethical and practical use of Artificial Intelligence in religious life, ministry and administration, bringing together religious women and men, educators and ministry leaders.

The workshop, titled “AI for Religious Life and Mission,” was held at the St Agnes CBSE School Hall on August 29.

Fr. A. I. Fernandes, Director of the Canara Communication Centre, Diocesan Secretary of the Commission for Social Communication of the Diocese of Mangalore and a Google Certified AI Coach, conducted the session.

Drawing on Catholic social teaching and recent Church documents, including Pope Leo XIV’s Magnifica Humanitas (2026) and Antiqua et Nova (2025), the workshop examined the opportunities and ethical challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence.

The discussions emphasised that technological advancement must serve human dignity, truth and peace, while underlining that AI cannot replace moral wisdom, human relationships or spiritual discernment.

The workshop also offered participants practical guidance on the use of AI tools in pastoral outreach, education, administration and other areas of ministry.

Sr. Jyothi Pinto BS, former Superior General, said the programme helped participants recognise new possibilities for engaging young people in digital spaces and extending pastoral outreach beyond traditional settings.

Sr. Ashwitha Cutinha said the hands-on training offered greater clarity and practical guidance on using AI applications, including Gemini, to respond to challenges encountered in ministry.

Fr. Dominic Vas OCD, President of CRI Mangaluru, said the workshop had opened new possibilities for collaborative learning as religious personnel increasingly explore the responsible integration of Artificial Intelligence into digital ministry and administrative leadership.

Fr. Anisio Mota SDB, along with the executive team of the CRI Mangaluru Unit, coordinated the programme.

The workshop reflected a growing effort among religious congregations and Church institutions to engage with emerging technologies while ensuring that their use remains guided by ethical responsibility, human dignity and the mission of the Church.
