Title: Franciscan Priest, Missionary and Preacher
Saint John of Capistrano was born Giovanni da Capestrano in 1386 in Capistrano, Italy. He studied law at the University of Perugia and became a successful lawyer. In 1412, he was appointed governor of Perugia, where he worked in public administration during a period of political unrest.
His life took a dramatic turn when he was imprisoned following a conflict involving neighbouring political forces. During his imprisonment, John began reflecting more deeply on his life and spiritual calling. After his release, he decided to leave his former ambitions behind and pursue religious life.

In 1416, he entered the Franciscan Order, embracing a life of prayer, discipline and service to God.
John studied theology under Saint Bernardine of Siena, who greatly influenced his spiritual development. After becoming a priest, he emerged as a powerful preacher whose sermons attracted large crowds.
He travelled extensively throughout Italy and other parts of Europe, including Germany, Austria, Poland and Hungary. Through his preaching, he encouraged people to repent, strengthen their relationship with God and live according to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
John also promoted devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus and worked to renew the Franciscan Order. His dedication helped strengthen religious communities during a period of considerable political and spiritual uncertainty.
Saint John became involved in important Church missions and diplomatic efforts. In 1456, following the Ottoman siege of Belgrade, he helped rally Christian forces alongside the Hungarian military leader John Hunyadi.
The defenders successfully broke the siege, an event of major historical significance in the region. However, John's involvement in military campaigning remains a complex aspect of his legacy and must be understood within the political and religious circumstances of fifteenth-century Europe.
After the events at Belgrade, John travelled to Ilok, where he died on 23 October 1456, reportedly from an illness associated with the difficult campaign.
His reputation for holiness and preaching continued to grow after his death. Pope Benedict XIII canonised him in 1724. Today, Saint John of Capistrano is remembered particularly for his Franciscan spirituality, missionary zeal and dedication to religious renewal.
Saint John's life teaches Catholics the importance of conversion, perseverance and trusting God's plan. His decision to leave a successful public career and embrace religious life demonstrates that spiritual growth sometimes requires courage and a willingness to change direction.
His dedication to preaching also reminds believers to share their faith through words and actions. By serving others, deepening their prayer life and remaining committed to their values, Catholics can follow his example of faithful service.
Saint John of Capistrano remains an inspiring figure in Franciscan history. His life shows how personal transformation, disciplined prayer and commitment to the Gospel can influence communities and encourage people during difficult times.
His legacy invites Christians to renew their faith, serve the Church with humility and respond courageously to the challenges of their own lives.
