Vatican, October 23, 2026: The Vatican’s commitment to caring for vulnerable children has taken a practical form through a charitable eye-care initiative that provided free eye examinations and prescription glasses to around 50 children from disadvantaged families earlier this month.
Organised at the Santa Marta Pediatric Dispensary on 8 October to mark World Sight Day, the initiative highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and accessible treatment for children experiencing vision problems.
The dispensary, located near Casa Santa Marta inside the Vatican, supports hundreds of low-income families from Italy and abroad. The eye-care programme was organised in partnership with the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation and the Dicastery for the Service of Charity.
Archbishop Luis Marin de San Martin, prefect of the Dicastery for the Service of Charity, visited the dispensary during the initiative, greeting children and families waiting for examinations.
He described the programme as a practical expression of the Church’s charitable mission, emphasising that charity must respond creatively to changing needs.
“Our doors are open to everyone because charity has no borders,” he said.
The archbishop also praised the volunteers who contribute their time and professional skills to supporting people in need, describing them as the often-unseen individuals who help extend the Pope’s charitable work.
Volunteer ophthalmologist Dr. Valeria Pendino, from the Bietti Foundation, stressed that early detection is essential to protecting children’s sight.
She explained that some of the children examined had missed routine eye checks and were experiencing visual difficulties that had affected the development of one or both eyes.
Dr. Pendino noted that identifying such conditions earlier could have changed the course of their treatment. For the children examined during the initiative, however, a pathway towards treatment and continued medical follow-up is now available.
Although the screenings took place on World Sight Day, the initiative’s significance extends beyond a single observance. It demonstrates how partnerships between medical professionals, charitable organisations and Church institutions can help disadvantaged families access essential healthcare.
As attention continues to focus on preventable sight loss, the Vatican initiative offers a reminder that timely examinations, appropriate treatment and follow-up care can make a lasting difference to children’s development and quality of life.
