Pope Leo XIV Calls for Ethical Media to Foster Peace and Dialogue

Vatican City, March 22, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has underscored the vital role of the media in promoting peace, truth and dialogue in a message marking the 25th anniversary of Tgcom24, an Italian television network operated by Mediaset.

In his message to the network’s director and editorial team, the Pope highlighted the “important mission” of the media in a time characterised by rapid change and “words too often shouted on the web”. He urged media professionals to build bridges of dialogue and encourage deeper understanding in society.

Emphasising the need for responsible storytelling, Pope Leo XIV called for a form of journalism that goes beyond surface-level reporting. He encouraged narratives that reflect respect, solidarity and compassion, especially towards those experiencing suffering and marginalisation.

The Pope also stressed the importance of truth and ethical responsibility in journalism. He warned against the spread of fake news and called on media institutions to promote a “culture of encounter” capable of uniting diverse sections of society.

Highlighting the broader impact of responsible communication, he noted that “free and respectful information that upholds human dignity” can serve as a powerful tool in advancing “an unarmed and persevering peace”.

The message comes as part of Tgcom24’s silver jubilee celebrations, reaffirming the Church’s call for media to act as a force for unity, integrity and peace in an increasingly fragmented digital landscape.
