May 15, 2026: Have you ever prayed for wisdom during confusion? Asked God for peace in anxiety or strength during difficult moments? Long before Pentecost became a feast celebrated across the world, the Apostles and Mary experienced those same fears and uncertainties.
After Jesus ascended into Heaven, the Apostles gathered in the Upper Room with Mary and spent nine days in prayer, waiting for the promise Jesus had given them — the coming of the Holy Spirit. Those nine days of waiting and prayer became what the Church now knows as the Pentecost Novena, the first novena in Christian tradition.
The Pentecost Novena begins on the Friday after the Solemnity of the Ascension and concludes on the Saturday before Pentecost Sunday. For centuries, Catholics have prayed this novena to prepare their hearts for the Feast of Pentecost and to seek the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord.
Each day of the novena reflects on a different grace or virtue, including Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Gentleness, and Faith. Many versions also include scripture readings, meditations, and prayers such as the Veni Creator Spiritus and the Veni Sancte Spiritus.

In the Catholic tradition, the Pentecost Novena is often called the “original novena” because it is rooted in the biblical period of prayer described in the Acts of the Apostles. In 1897, Pope Leo XIII officially decreed that the Novena to the Holy Spirit should be observed annually by all the faithful.
As Pentecost approaches, the novena serves as a reminder that the Holy Spirit continues to guide, strengthen, and renew the faithful even today. Share this with someone who may be praying for wisdom, peace, courage, or a deeper relationship with God.
