Trichy, June 25, 2026 — Church leaders and pastoral coordinators from across the region gathered at the Laity Commission Centre in Prattiyur, Trichy, on June 24 for a one-day seminar on pastoral planning aimed at strengthening the implementation of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CCBI) Pastoral Plan, known as Mission 2033.
The seminar brought together Regional Secretaries and Coordinators of various Pastoral Commissions to reflect on the Church’s future direction and to develop strategies aligned with the vision and goals of Mission 2033.
The keynote resource person was Bishop Gerald Lobo, Bishop Emeritus of Udupi and Chairman of the National Facilitating Committee of the CCBI. Drawing from his extensive pastoral and episcopal experience, Bishop Lobo explained the Process of Pastoral Planning (PPP), outlining how it functions at different levels of the Church—from the Vatican to diocesan structures. He also shared successful pastoral initiatives undertaken during his ministry, offering practical insights into effective pastoral leadership.
A central focus of the seminar was the guiding question of Mission 2033: “What does God want us to be in 2033?” Participants explored the importance of long-term pastoral planning, greater collaboration between dioceses and regional bodies, and ways to translate pastoral objectives into concrete actions at the grassroots level.
The programme included a session titled “Jesus’ Plan – The Model for Christian Pastoral Ministry,” which examined Christ’s ministry as the foundation for contemporary pastoral practice. Participants also viewed a documentary showcasing the fruits and impact of pastoral planning initiatives implemented in various parts of the Church.
Regional Commission Secretaries and Diocesan Secretaries shared their experiences, challenges, and recommendations, contributing to discussions on future priorities and collaborative pastoral action.
Bishop Nazaren Soosai, Secretary General of the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council (TNBC), moderated the sessions and guided the discussions throughout the day. The seminar was coordinated by Rev. Fr Joe Francis, Deputy General Secretary, while Fr Maria Michel served as host.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Fr J. Benedict Barnabas, followed by a closing prayer and blessing imparted by Bishop Nazaren Soosai.
Organisers described the seminar as an important step in fostering a shared pastoral vision and strengthening the Church’s commitment to achieving the goals of Mission 2033 through coordinated planning, collaboration and missionary outreach.
