Mount Carmel College Bengaluru Creates History as World's First Carmelite Women's Deemed-to-be University

Bengaluru, June 25, 2026: Mount Carmel College, Autonomous, Bengaluru, has been granted Deemed-to-be University status, becoming the world's first Carmelite Multidisciplinary University owned and managed by Women Religious ( CSST) Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa.

The recognition, officially communicated on June 24, crowns nearly eight decades of the institution's commitment to women's education and leadership formation and reflects the congregation's long-standing mission of empowering women through holistic, value-based learning.

Welcoming the announcement, Sr. Teresa CSST, General Councillor for Education, described the achievement as both an honour and an affirmation of the congregation's educational vision.

"For almost eighty years, Mount Carmel College has been led by women and dedicated to forming generations of confident, compassionate and socially responsible women leaders," she said. "This recognition validates our enduring commitment to academic excellence, leadership development and transformative education."

According to Sr. Teresa, the new status is expected to open wider opportunities for students through enhanced research programmes, international collaborations, dual-degree and twinning arrangements with foreign universities, faculty and student exchange initiatives, and industry-linked academic programmes designed to meet emerging global needs.

"Students can expect greater global exposure, stronger career prospects, improved research competitiveness, and access to nationally and globally relevant Gen Z courses," she said. "Above all, they will be equipped to become socially sensitive individuals committed to meaningful action."

She attributed the institution's success to its distinctive educational philosophy rooted in the CSST charism.

"Our legacy lies in forming intellectually vibrant, spiritually rooted, emotionally mature, ecologically sensitive, socially responsible, morally upright and truly liberated citizens for India," she said. "This legacy of excellence seeks to build a globally empowered nation for a better world tomorrow."

The achievement represents a significant chapter in the history of the CSST congregation, which has served the field of education for nearly 140 years and has been involved in higher education ministry for a century.

In a message addressed to the Mount Carmel community following the announcement, Sr. Teresa described the recognition as "a moment of grace, thanksgiving and celebration." She acknowledged the contributions of the congregation's leadership, management, faculty, staff, students, alumni, benefactors and former administrators whose efforts helped secure the university status.

She emphasized that the recognition brings with it a renewed responsibility to continue providing transformative and quality education in service of society and nation-building.

Sr. Teresa also expressed gratitude to the Higher Education Department of the Government of Karnataka, Dr. Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University, the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Education for their guidance and support throughout the process.

Describing the development as a milestone for the Karnataka Province of the CSST congregation, she said the achievement was a testament to God's grace and called upon the university community to remain steadfast in its mission.

Invoking the Carmelite spirit and the vision of the congregation's foundress, Mother Teresa of St. Rose of Lima, she expressed hope that the university would continue to shape generations of women leaders committed to knowledge, compassion and integrity.

"As we celebrate this historic moment, we look to the future with gratitude and hope," she said, thanking the institution's well-wishers and supporters for their prayers, sacrifices and collaboration over the years.

The elevation of Mount Carmel College to Deemed-to-be University status marks a new chapter in its distinguished history and positions the institution to expand its contribution to higher education while remaining faithful to its founding mission of empowering women through education.
