Orthodox Church Condemns Police Action Against Student Protesters, Calls for Dialogue

New Delhi, July 22, 2026: The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church has condemned the police action against students protesting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and urged the government to address their concerns through dialogue rather than force.

Yuhanon Mar Diascoros Metropolitan, speaking on behalf of the Church, appealed to the authorities to engage with the protesters and respond to their grievances through meaningful dialogue and constructive measures.

The statement followed clashes between police and demonstrators during protests led by the youth-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which has raised concerns over alleged examination irregularities, education reforms and employment opportunities, besides demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Reports from the protest site said police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse protesters after some demonstrators attempted to march towards Parliament.

The Metropolitan stressed that democratic societies must provide space for peaceful protest and listen attentively to the concerns of young people. He said addressing public dissatisfaction with openness and compassion was essential to preserving public trust in democratic institutions.

The protests, which reportedly began over allegations of examination paper leaks, have expanded into a wider movement focusing on education, employment and transparency. Students, teachers, professionals and parents have participated in demonstrations in the national capital.

The movement received further attention following the hospitalisation of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk after a 21-day hunger strike in solidarity with the protesters.

The Orthodox Church urged the government to initiate constructive engagement with the students and address their concerns through democratic means. It said listening to young people and working towards practical solutions would strengthen public confidence and help prevent unnecessary confrontation.

The Church's appeal comes as Parliament remains in session, with education policy, employment and governance continuing to feature prominently in the national discourse.
