July 23, 2026: Have you ever wondered if God has grown tired of your mistakes?
It is a question many carry quietly. We pray, we stumble, we promise to do better, and sometimes we wonder whether God is still listening. More than 300 years ago, a saint dedicated his life to answering that very fear with one reassuring message: God never stops loving those who turn back to Him.
That saint was St. Alphonsus Liguori.
As the Church prepares to celebrate his feast on 1 August, Catholics are invited to pray the Novena to St. Alphonsus Liguori—a nine-day journey that leads us to rediscover God's unfailing mercy, renew our trust in Him and deepen our relationship with Christ. More than a cherished tradition, this novena is an invitation to experience the peace that comes from placing our lives in the hands of a loving and compassionate God.

St. Alphonsus knew what it meant to experience disappointment. Born into a noble family in Naples, Italy, he became one of the most brilliant lawyers of his time, earning admiration for his sharp intellect and remarkable success in the courtroom. But everything changed after he suffered a humiliating defeat in a high-profile legal case. The unexpected setback shook him deeply, prompting him to question the value of worldly success and recognise that God was calling him to something greater.
Leaving behind his flourishing legal career, Alphonsus embraced the priesthood with wholehearted dedication. He spent the rest of his life preaching the Gospel, hearing confessions, caring for the poor and reaching out to those who had drifted away from the Church. In 1732, he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, popularly known as the Redemptorists, whose mission continues to proclaim God's abundant redemption to people across the world.
What made St. Alphonsus one of the Church's greatest spiritual masters was not only his ministry but also his profound writings. His reflections on prayer, the Eucharist, the Passion of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary have nourished generations of Catholics. His timeless work, The Glories of Mary, remains one of the most treasured books on Marian devotion. Recognising his immense contribution to theology and spirituality, the Church declared him a Doctor of the Church.
At the heart of his teaching was a simple but life-changing conviction: prayer is the key to salvation because it opens our hearts to God's grace. St. Alphonsus constantly encouraged the faithful never to lose hope, reminding them that God's mercy is always greater than human weakness and that no sincere prayer goes unheard.
That is why the Novena to St. Alphonsus Liguori continues to inspire countless faithful today.
Whether you are seeking healing, praying for your family, discerning an important decision, struggling with guilt or simply longing to grow closer to Christ, these nine days offer an opportunity to entrust every intention to God through the intercession of a saint who dedicated his life to leading souls towards divine mercy.
In a world often marked by anxiety, uncertainty and endless distractions, St. Alphonsus reminds us that holiness is not about perfection but about trusting God's love each day and returning to Him whenever we fall. His own life is a powerful witness that even our greatest disappointments can become the beginning of God's greater plan.
As you prepare for his feast, may the Novena to St. Alphonsus Liguori become more than a daily prayer. May it be a journey of hope, healing and renewed faith, drawing you closer to the Lord who never grows weary of forgiving, never stops calling His children home and never ceases to love them.
