Madhya Pradesh Church Leaders Commit to Drug-Free India Campaign

BHOPAL, August 3, 2026: Catholic Church leaders from across Madhya Pradesh have resolved to promote the government’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Drug-Free India Campaign) through Catholic educational institutions, pastoral centres and social service organisations across the state.

The decision was taken during a two-day Joint Regional Meeting held at the Pastoral Centre, Bhopal, on August 1 and 2. The gathering brought together representatives of the Council of Bishops of Madhya Pradesh, the Catholic Council of Madhya Pradesh, the Conference of Religious of India, the Commission for Diocesan Priests of India, regional secretaries, rectors and diocesan representatives.

The meeting focused on authentic Christian witness, responsible citizenship and strengthening collaboration in pastoral ministry.

The programme included the celebration of the Eucharist, a welcome ceremony, the traditional lighting of the lamp and an address by James Antony on the importance of living Christian values, promoting social responsibility and encouraging active participation in nation-building.

Participants reviewed contemporary challenges confronting the Church and discussed pastoral responses to the changing socio-cultural context. Annual activities of regional commissions were also reviewed, along with plans for the coming year.

Archbishop Durairaj SVD of Bhopal, President of the Council of Bishops of Madhya Pradesh, urged the secretaries of regional commissions to pursue their ministries with renewed commitment. He called for greater efforts towards Christian unity, social justice and the holistic development of society through their respective apostolates.

The discussions also explored ways to strengthen collaboration in evangelisation, education, youth ministry, social service, communications and faith formation across the dioceses of Madhya Pradesh.

The decision to promote the Drug-Free India Campaign emerged as a major outcome of the meeting. Catholic institutions and organisations will be encouraged to participate in efforts to prevent substance abuse and promote healthier and more responsible communities.

According to Fr Alfred D’Souza, Public Relations Officer of the Council of Bishops of Madhya Pradesh, an eight-member Church delegation led by Archbishop Durairaj also paid a courtesy visit to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.

During the meeting, the delegation briefed the Chief Minister on the mission and activities of the Catholic Bishops’ Council and reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to contributing to the state’s and nation’s social, educational and humanitarian development.

The Church leaders concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to authentic Gospel witness, responsible citizenship and collaborative service for justice and peace. The programme ended with a vote of thanks and concluding prayer.
