Italy, July 18, 2025 : In a proud moment for Kerala’s Christian community, Sr. Cissy, a Keralite nun, has been elected as the new Superior General of the Venerini religious congregation, which is headquartered in Italy. The announcement was made during the General Chapter currently taking place in Rome.
Sr. Cissy hails from the Vyakulamatha Parish in Kannur and belongs to the Muringamyal family. She had previously served as the first Provincial of the Indian Province of the Venerini Sisters and also held the position of Vicar General under the outgoing Superior General, Mother Eliana Massimi.
Joining her in the new leadership team is another Malayali, Sr. Brigitte Vadakkepurakkal, who has been appointed as General Councillor in the North. Sr. Brigitte holds the distinction of being the first Malayali to become Provincial of the Indian Province. She most recently served as the administrator of the Venerini Higher Secondary School near Farook College in Kozhikode.
The Religious Teachers Venerini, commonly known as the Venerini Sisters, were founded by Saint Rose Venerini in 1685 in Viterbo, Italy. The congregation has a global presence, with missions in countries including Italy, the United States, India, Albania, Romania, Cameroon, Nigeria, and across Latin America. Their work primarily focuses on education and social upliftment.
The election of Sisters Cissy and Brigitte Vadakkepurakkal to top leadership roles marks a significant milestone for the Indian Province and a moment of celebration for the Malayali Catholic community.
