Bangalore, Nov 4, 2025: Diocesan and regional communication secretaries from across India have gathered in Bengaluru for a two-day meet on November 4 and 5, reflecting on how the Church can communicate faith and hope in the digital age. The event, held as part of the Jubilee of Communicators – 2025, focuses on the theme “Synodal Communication in the Digital Environment.” Archbishop Peter Machado of Bengaluru celebrated the inaugural Mass, marking the opening of the event.
Addressing the participants on being 'Heralds of Hope', Bishop Eugene Joseph of Varanasi, Member of the CBCI Office for Social Communications, said communication must serve human dignity and counter the growing culture of fear. He emphasised that the antidote lies in communicating hope, as the Pope urged communicators to become bearers of hope in a world marked by misinformation and polarisation.
Fr. Cyril Victor Joseph, CCBI Media Apostolate, reflected on adapting to the digital age, noting that the contemporary media environment is constantly shifting and requires communicators to evolve effectively. He underlined the importance of ethical reporting and the responsible use of social media in building a credible and compassionate Church presence online. He encouraged participants to view digital platforms not merely as tools for information, but as spaces for dialogue, witness, and evangelisation.
Speaking on PR strategies, Fr. Nigel Barrett, PRO of the CCBI and Western Regional Secretary, emphasised the importance of “telling the story right” and strengthening the Church’s digital presence through a well-designed website and active social media platforms. He underlined the need to share good news and ensure that the Church’s voice is heard from the grassroots to the international level. He also touched upon budgeting, interreligious harmony, and the importance of showcasing the initiatives of various CCBI commissions through effective public engagement.
Introducing Catholic Connect, Fr. Cyril Victor presented it as a digital platform bringing technology within reach of every parish at no cost. Abhishek Joseph, General Manager, outlined its diverse features—news, matrimony, spiritual content, and JobsConnect—designed to serve the Catholic community. Canisha Judith, Head of Content, highlighted the steady growth of the news section, while Naveen D’Souza, Head of Matrimony, spoke on fostering meaningful Catholic connections through the service.
Fr. Joe Xavier SJ led moments of reflection and facilitated practical sessions for spiritual conversations in groups, encouraging participants to deepen their spiritual grounding and collaborative mission. He invited communicators to listen with empathy and discernment, emphasising that authentic communication flows from genuine spiritual encounter and shared understanding.
