New Delhi, June 9, 2025: India recorded 358 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of active cases in the country to 6,491 as of 8 am Monday, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). No deaths linked to the virus were reported in the past 24 hours.
Kerala continues to be the state with the highest number of active COVID-19 cases, with the tally reaching 1,957 on Monday morning. The state recorded seven fresh cases in the last 24 hours, according to data released on the official website of the MoHFW. Other significantly impacted states include Gujarat, West Bengal, and the national capital, Delhi, which logged 42 new cases, bringing its total active tally to 728.
According to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), 624 COVID-19 patients across the country were either discharged, declared cured, or reported as migrated in the past 24 hours.
The current surge in infections is driven by the emergence of Omicron sub-lineages like JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFC. Although these variants are more transmissible, they have, so far, caused only mild symptoms. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated these as 'Variants Under Monitoring', meaning they do not currently pose a global threat but require continued close observation and vigilance.
Despite the resurgence, public health experts indicate that SARS-CoV-2 has transitioned into a recurring pattern akin to seasonal influenza, with manageable symptoms in most cases. Nonetheless, authorities are urging citizens to remain cautious.
