As the Universal Church marks the third month death anniversary of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, heartfelt tributes continue to pour in from across the world. One such moving homage comes from India, where Fr. Dr. Ramesh D’Souza, a Catholic priest from the Diocese of Vasai, has released an English tribute song titled “Heart of a Shepherd”, honouring the life, mission, and spiritual legacy of the late Holy Father.
Composed and sung by Fr. Ramesh himself, the powerful piece captures the spirit of Pope Francis’ pastoral leadership—marked by compassion, service, and deep love for humanity. The lyrics, were co-written by Fr. Ramesh and Vijay John, inspired by the Pope’s enduring witness to Christ’s love and his tireless advocacy for the poor, the marginalised, and the Earth.
The song’s verses reflect Pope Francis’ simple yet profound approach to leadership, beginning with a portrait of a man who “walked with grace, not thrones or gold” and who listened to “every cry” with love. The chorus resonates as a universal call to follow the example of Christ through the Pope’s model:
“Heart of a shepherd, gentle and true, / You showed the world what Christ would do.”
In the second verse, the lyrics highlight Pope Francis’ peace-making efforts and his tender regard for the vulnerable, especially children:
“You prayed for peace where war still cries, / You saw the world through children’s eyes.”
Drawing on Pope Francis’ encyclicals and public ministry, the chorus speaks of a “humble and wise” shepherd who stood firmly “for the Earth, the least,” and extended mercy “with healing words and outstretched hand.”
A moving bridge proclaims:
“Not just a Pope, but hope you gave, / A servant strong, a soul so brave.”
The final chorus culminates in a timeless blessing:
“A holy flame that still will burn — / With love that leads the world to turn.”
This latest tribute follows three earlier musical offerings also dedicated to Pope Francis by Fr. Ramesh:
