Kharsang, Arunachal Pradesh, May 2, 2026: Hundreds of Christians gathered at the General Ground in Kharsang, in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district, on April 30, demanding the repeal of the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA), 1978, which they say threatens religious liberty and communal harmony.
The peaceful sit-in, organised by the Changlang District Christian Forum (CDCF) under the aegis of the Arunachal Christian Forum, drew participation from various Christian organisations, church communities, and local residents from across the district.
Holding banners and placards, the demonstrators expressed deep concern over the continued existence of the decades-old legislation. Participants argued that the Act undermines the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom and interferes with an individual's right to choose and practise their faith.
The programme, which commenced at 10 a.m. and concluded at 2 p.m., was marked by prayers, devotional hymns, and a series of addresses by Church leaders and representatives of Christian bodies. Speakers emphasised the importance of unity among believers and called for collective efforts to safeguard the constitutional rights of all citizens.
Addressing the gathering, several leaders urged the government to reconsider the law and take concrete steps towards its repeal. They maintained that the legislation has caused anxiety among Christian communities and could adversely affect the peaceful coexistence of diverse religious groups in the state.
Organisers underscored that the dharna was entirely peaceful and intended to convey the concerns of the Christian community to the authorities through democratic means. They said the movement seeks to protect fundamental rights while promoting communal harmony and mutual respect among all sections of society.
The Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, enacted in 1978, has long remained a subject of debate among Christian groups in the state, who view it as incompatible with the constitutional principles of religious freedom and human dignity.
