Gwalior, August 23, 2026: The Diocese of Gwalior observed Prison Ministry Sunday and Justice Sunday with a celebration at the IJ Multipurpose Centre in Dabra on August 23, highlighting the Church’s commitment to prisoners, justice and human dignity.
Bishop Joseph Thykkattil of Gwalior was the chief guest at the programme. Fr. Pius, Financial Administrator of the diocese, presided over the Holy Mass and delivered the homily.
Addressing the gathering, Bishop Thykkattil called for compassion and care for prisoners. “Every prisoner is God’s child. Be kind to them and take care of them,” he said, while appreciating those engaged in prison ministry and encouraging them to continue their service.
Fr. Arokia Doss, Director of Prison Ministry in the Diocese of Gwalior, joined the programme virtually and expressed gratitude to members of the ministry for their continued commitment.
Priests from neighbouring parishes, including Fr. Thomas and Fr. Joseph James, along with parishioners and religious sisters, participated in the celebration. The Dabra Choir led the liturgical singing.
Bishop Thykkattil also honoured members of the diocesan Prison Ministry in recognition of their service. Those recognised included Abel Extross, Bazil, Ajay Marko, Phillip, Helina, Monika Johnson, Clara Peardon, Margret Extross, Sr. Theodosia, MC, Sr. Ramya, CSST, and Perpet Petet.
Fr. Sanu Alunkal, Director of the IJ Multipurpose Centre, coordinated the arrangements for the programme.
The observance underlined the Church’s mission to accompany prisoners and others who are often overlooked by society, while promoting justice, mercy and respect for human dignity.
