Families Embrace Catholic Faith After Witnessing Christian Life in Meghalaya

Meghalaya, April 30, 2026: In the quiet, scenic village of Nonglang in the Mawkyrwat Sub-Division of West Khasi Hills, a powerful story of faith, unity and transformation has been unfolding—one that reflects the living witness of the Gospel through community life.

Nestled amid waterfalls, evergreen forests and valleys, Nonglang is home to the Khasi tribes, known for their rich cultural heritage and deeply rooted spirituality. The village, part of Nativity Parish, Mawkyrwat in the Nongstoin Diocese, is predominantly Catholic, though families from other denominations also reside here in harmony.

Despite socio-economic challenges, the people of Nonglang have continued to live as one community. A significant turning point came in 2010, when Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) were formed in the village. Since then, regular BEC meetings have been conducted, focusing on Gospel sharing, prayer and reflection.

Over time, these gatherings began to bear fruit beyond the Catholic community. BEC members extended their mission through acts of service—visiting the sick, supporting families in need, and becoming a visible sign of compassion and unity. Their dedication did not go unnoticed. Even families from other denominations began to admire and appreciate their way of life.

Drawn by this witness, several families invited BEC members into their homes for prayer. Among them were the families of Mrs. Nolinda Kharlyndoh and Mr. Daelinton Khardewsaw, Mrs. Shimtidaris, Mr. Brestar Lyngdoh and Mrs. Kwena Lawphniaw, Mr. Londar Langte and Mrs. Marlinda Kharlyngdoh, and Mrs. Oilin Lawphniaw.

Though not initially part of the Catholic faith, these families began participating in BEC meetings, engaging in Gospel sharing and prayer. What started as moments of interaction gradually turned into a deeper spiritual journey.

As days and months passed, these families experienced a growing sense of calling. They approached the BEC members, expressing their desire to embrace the Catholic faith. The matter was then brought to the Parish Priest, and the families were given proper guidance and formation.

In due course, they were prepared to receive the sacraments—baptism, confirmation, confession and Holy Communion—marking the beginning of a new chapter in their faith journey.

The families who embraced the faith include Mrs. Nolinda Kharlyndoh and her husband Mr. Daelinton Khardewsaw, Mrs. Shimtidaris and her two children, Mr. Brestar Lyngdoh and his wife Mrs. Kwena Lawphniaw, Mr. Londar Langte and his wife Mrs. Marlinda Kharlyngdoh, and Mrs. Oilin Lawphniaw along with her five children.

Their entry into the Catholic Church has strengthened the faith of the entire parish community and the Diocese of Nongstoin. It stands as a testimony to the transformative power of lived faith.

The story of Nonglang highlights that BECs are not confined to prayer meetings or Scripture reflection alone. They are spaces where Gospel values are lived out—through service, unity and openness to others.

In this small village, the mission continues. Through simple acts of faith and love, BECs are quietly touching lives, inspiring hearts, and leading more people towards a deeper encounter with Christ.
