The Woman Who Became Known as the “Praying Mother”

Saint Euphrasia Eluvathingal was one of Kerala's most beloved saints, remembered for her extraordinary life of prayer and profound union with God.

Born Rosa Eluvathingal in 1877, she grew up in a deeply Christian family in Kerala. Her mother especially encouraged devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and helped nurture Rosa's desire for holiness. From an early age, Rosa longed to dedicate her life entirely to God.

A Childhood Shaped by Prayer

As a young girl, Rosa developed a deep love for prayer and spiritual life.

Despite her father's initial desire that she should marry, Rosa remained determined to follow her vocation. Eventually, she entered the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel.

On 10 May 1897, she became a postulant and received the name Euphrasia of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She later professed her religious vows and dedicated her life completely to Christ.

A Life Hidden with Christ

Mother Euphrasia did not seek recognition or importance.

She served as a novice mistress and later as the superior of St. Mary's Convent at Ollur. Yet her greatest desire was to live quietly and remain close to God.

She spent long hours before the Blessed Sacrament and developed a deep devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Crucified Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her fellow sisters affectionately called her the “Mobile Tabernacle” because they believed that her profound union with Christ was reflected in her life.

The “Praying Mother”

The people of Ollur frequently saw Mother Euphrasia absorbed in prayer.

Her holiness was expressed through humility, patience, charity and a willingness to accept suffering for love of Christ. Those who approached her found comfort, encouragement and compassion.

Because of her constant life of prayer, the local people gave her the name by which she is still remembered today: the “Praying Mother”.

A Saint for Kerala and the World

Mother Euphrasia died on 29 August 1952 after a lifetime of quiet faithfulness.

She was beatified in 2006 and canonised by Pope Francis on 23 November 2014. Pope Francis described her profound union with God as an example and encouragement to the faithful.

Why Saint Euphrasia Eluvathingal Still Matters

Saint Euphrasia reminds Catholics that holiness is not always found in public achievements.

Sometimes, holiness is discovered in silence, prayer, humility and faithful love.
