Tamil Nadu, February 28, 2026 — In a move that strengthens global devotion to India’s first lay Catholic saint, Fr. Lord Winner has been appointed to lead the development of an international shrine dedicated to St. Devasahayam Pillai. The initiative centres on St. Devasahayam Mount Shrine, a historic site of martyrdom that continues to draw growing numbers of pilgrims from India and abroad.
Reflecting on his transition after a decade of service at the Claretian General Mission Procure in Rome, Fr. Winner described the appointment as a significant new phase in his ministry. His previous responsibilities within the Claretian Missionaries included mission coordination, project development, fundraising, and formation, experience expected to guide the shrine’s expansion as an international centre of pilgrimage.
The shrine is located within the Diocese of Kottar and stands at the site traditionally associated with the saint’s martyrdom in 1752. The parish church, Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, Devasahayam Mount, situated at Kattadimalai near Aralvaimozhi, has long served as a focal point of remembrance and prayer, commemorating the saint’s steadfast witness to faith amid persecution.
Pilgrims continue to visit the mount in large numbers, drawn by devotion to St. Devasahayam and the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows. The site has increasingly become a space of spiritual encounter that transcends regional and cultural boundaries, welcoming the faithful as well as seekers from diverse backgrounds.
The development of the international shrine is expected to enhance the global recognition of St. Devasahayam Pillai’s witness and deepen engagement with his legacy of courage, faith, and perseverance. As the Church advances this initiative, Devasahayam Mount is poised to emerge more prominently on the international pilgrimage landscape.
