New Delhi, September 10, 2025 – The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) will solemnly celebrate the Ecumenical Jubilee 2025 on September 11, marking the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea and the proclamation of the Nicene Creed. The occasion is set to be a historic moment of faith and unity for the Church in India and across the world.
The commemoration will open with an ecumenical gathering at St. Columba’s School, New Delhi, in the evening, bringing together Church leaders, representatives of various Christian traditions, religious men and women, lay leaders, and faithful from across the country. The celebration will emphasise the enduring significance of the Nicene Creed in strengthening Christian unity and bearing common witness in the modern world.
Alongside the Jubilee, the CBCI Standing Committee will convene in New Delhi on 11 and 12 September under the leadership of Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, President of the CBCI. Around 50 participants, including Cardinals, Archbishops, and Bishops, are expected to take part in the meeting, which will reflect on the life and mission of the Church in India and address contemporary challenges facing the Christian community and wider society.
Later in the evening on 11 September, a solemn Eucharistic Celebration will be held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, New Delhi, in evening His Excellency Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, will preside over the Mass, concelebrated by Cardinals, Major Archbishops, Archbishops, Bishops, and a large number of priests. Thousands of faithful from across India, especially from the Archdiocese of Delhi, the Archdiocese of Faridabad, and the Diocese of Gurgaon, are expected to take part in the celebration of thanksgiving, faith, and communion.
The Jubilee aims to stand as a witness to the unity of the Catholic Church in its diversity and to reaffirm its mission of evangelisation, dialogue, peace, reconciliation, and nation-building.
Church leaders will also highlight the continued relevance of the Nicene Creed, which unites Christians across centuries and cultures in the one faith of the Church.
The CBCI has expressed gratitude to clergy, religious, lay leaders, benefactors, and volunteers whose dedicated service is helping to prepare for these historic celebrations.
