Why Is Mary Sometimes Shown With a Star?

Sept 8, 2026: Look closely at images of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and you may notice a star near her head, on her veil, or as part of her crown. This star is not merely decorative. It expresses a Christian tradition that presents Mary as a sign of hope and a guide leading believers to Jesus Christ.

The Star as a Marian Title

One of the best-known Marian titles connected with the star is Stella Maris, meaning “Star of the Sea.” For centuries, sailors and people connected with the maritime world have invoked Mary under this title, trusting in her protection during the dangers of the sea. Pope John Paul II explains that Christ accompanied his disciples in their boats, calmed storms, and continues to care for those who live and work at sea.

Mary as the Star of Hope

The image of a star also speaks to the spiritual journey of every Christian. Pope Benedict XVI compares human life to a voyage across a dark and stormy sea, in which people look to the stars for direction. Christ is the true light of the world, but Mary is a close and reliable “star of hope” because, through her “yes,” she welcomed the Saviour into the world.

Mary’s star does not compete with Christ. She does not shine by her own power; rather, she reflects the light of her Son. Her life points believers toward Jesus and encourages them to remain faithful during times of darkness and trial.

The Twelve Stars of Revelation

Some representations of Mary show not one star but twelve stars. This recalls Revelation’s vision of a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars. The image refers both to Mary and to the Church: Mary is the Mother of Christ, while the Church continues to bring Christ into the world.

What the Star Tells Us

When Mary is shown with a star, the image reminds us of her faith, hope, and maternal guidance. She points beyond herself to Jesus, the true Light. In life’s storms and uncertainties, Mary remains a sign that God has not abandoned his people and that the journey toward Christ is sustained by hope.
