Bhopal Archdiocese Trains Altar Servers in Liturgical Ministry

Bhopal, October 2, 2026: Altar servers from the Bhopal Deanery were trained in the responsibilities and spiritual significance of their ministry during a formation programme organised by the Liturgy Commission of the Archdiocese of Bhopal at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Seva Sadan, on October 2.

The programme, held under the theme “Serve with Joy…” (Rom 12:11), sought to help altar servers deepen their understanding of the Sacred Liturgy and carry out their ministry with greater reverence, discipline and confidence.

Fr. Alexander Jesudadsan served as the resource person and provided practical and liturgical instruction on the role of altar servers. The sessions covered their responsibilities during Mass, proper movements and conduct in the sanctuary, reverence towards the Eucharist, liturgical vessels and sacred objects, and the practical aspects of assisting at the altar.

The training emphasised that altar serving is more than performing ceremonial duties. It is a ministry of service to God and the Church that calls for attentiveness, discipline and a prayerful disposition.

Fr. Ishwardas Minj, Vicar General of the archdiocese, celebrated the Eucharist. In his homily, he reflected on the role of guardian angels as a reminder of God’s constant care and protection. He said the Church teaches that each person is accompanied by a guardian angel who guides and protects them on their journey towards God.

Fr. Thomas Philip, Director of the Liturgical Commission, proposed the vote of thanks. Addressing the altar servers, he said their ministry involved more than carrying the cross, lighting candles, ringing bells or assisting the priest.

He encouraged them to serve at the altar with “clean hands, attentive minds, prayerful hearts and joyful spirits,” reminding them that their manner of service should reflect their faith and commitment to Christ.

The programme concluded with an appeal to the altar servers to remain faithful to their ministry and grow as responsible and joyful servants at the altar and witnesses of Christ in their communities.
