India End 44-Year Wait for Asian Games Women’s Hockey Gold

Kakamigahara, Japan, October 2, 2026: India ended a 44-year wait for the Asian Games women’s hockey gold medal with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over defending champions China on Friday, with Lalremsiami’s 10th-minute strike securing both the continental title and a direct berth at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The triumph gave India their second Asian Games gold in women’s hockey, the previous title having come in 1982. India had reached the final twice since then, finishing runners-up in 1998 and 2018.

Lalremsiami provided the decisive moment in the 10th minute, marking her 200th international appearance with a powerful reverse-stick strike. Sakshi Rana’s pass into the circle found the forward in a promising position, and Lalremsiami sent the ball into the upper netting to give India an early lead.

China responded with sustained pressure, forcing India into a largely defensive battle for much of the remainder of the contest. The Chinese earned their first penalty corner in the 18th minute, but India’s defence dealt with the threat.

The crucial moment came in the 24th minute when China were awarded a penalty stroke after Lalremsiami was penalised for obstructing a forward. Goalkeeper Savita Punia produced a vital save, diving to her left to keep out the low effort and preserve India’s lead.

India were forced to absorb further pressure after the interval as China pushed aggressively for an equaliser. The Indian defence repeatedly blocked attacking moves and disrupted China’s passing, while Savita Punia remained composed whenever the Chinese broke through.

China intensified their attack late in the match and even withdrew their goalkeeper in the closing minutes to add an extra outfield player. India, however, held firm to protect their one-goal advantage until the final whistle.

The victory also secured India direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, adding another major achievement to a memorable Asian Games campaign.

The gold connects the present generation of Indian players with the historic 1982 team led by captain Eliza Nelson. After decades of near misses, the Indian women have once again reached the summit of Asian Games hockey.

Lalremsiami’s milestone goal, Savita Punia’s crucial save and a disciplined defensive effort proved decisive as India held off China to reclaim the Asian Games title after more than four decades.
