Be Part of The First Ever Historical Eco-Church Inspired by St. Francis of Assisi

Bengaluru, September 30, 2026: In a pioneering ecological initiative that brings together faith and environmental stewardship, the Archdiocese of Bangalore is envisioning a church dedicated to St Francis of Assisi in Attibele, Bengaluru, using recycled plastic waste and sustainable construction methods. The project seeks to transform discarded materials into a sacred space, offering a meaningful expression of the Church’s commitment to caring for creation while creating a lasting place of worship for the community.

Undertaken in partnership with CIRCATO, a Bengaluru-based sustainable construction company, the project aims to use non-recyclable waste, including plastic wrappers, pouches and packaging materials, in construction. The initiative seeks to give discarded materials a new purpose while reducing the exploitation of natural resources.

Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore has now appealed to the faithful, individuals, families and well-wishers to support the completion of the project.

The proposed Church of St Francis of Assisi draws inspiration from its patron saint, known for his simplicity, fraternity and love for God's creation. The project also reflects the Church's call to care for the environment and protect our common home.

Turning an Ecological Vision into Reality

The church will serve the growing Catholic community of Attibele while demonstrating how sustainable construction can contribute to environmental protection. By bringing together faith, technological innovation and ecological responsibility, the initiative seeks to create a landmark that inspires future generations to embrace care for creation as an essential part of Christian life.

Archbishop Machado has invited well-wishers to contribute according to their means, expressing gratitude for their generosity and assuring them of his prayers.

The appeal provides for naming opportunities for significant contributors, allowing individuals, families and benefactors to be remembered in a lasting and meaningful way within the place of worship.
