YCS/YSM India Opens National Council and Study Session in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, May 26, 2026: YCS/YSM India inaugurated its 20th National Council and 19th Study Session in Mangaluru, bringing together young leaders from across the country for a national gathering centred on leadership formation, cultural exchange and national integration.

Hosted by the Karnataka Region in collaboration with the Diocese of Mangalore, the programme commenced with a solemn Eucharistic celebration led by Msgr. Maxim Noronha. The unveiling of the official logo formally marked the opening of the council and study session.

Addressing the participants, Roy Castelino reflected on the significance of unity in diversity, emphasising that genuine unity is realised when people remain diverse yet deeply connected as one community.

Speaking on the role of youth in society, Fr. Wilfred Prakash D'Souza encouraged students to recognise their responsibility in nation-building. In his message to the delegates, Msgr. Noronha called on young people to emerge as courageous leaders committed to justice and service. He urged them to become “the voice of the voiceless” in today’s society.

The inaugural programme was attended by several Church leaders and youth animators, including Erol Samuel, Fr. Chetan Machado, Fr. Vishal Mal, Fr. Ashwin Cardoza, Sr. Lenita Lobo, Anson Nazareth, Monet Renee and Fr. Anthony Derrick SJ, among others.

A major highlight of the gathering was the regional stall exhibition, where delegates presented the traditions, cuisines, attire and lifestyles of their respective regions. The exhibition fostered interaction and mutual appreciation among participants representing the diverse cultural landscape of India.

The host Karnataka Region REXCO members also presented a vibrant folk dance showcasing the rich historical and cultural heritage of Karnataka, adding colour and festive spirit to the national event.

The ongoing national council reflects YCS/YSM India’s continued commitment to nurturing responsible leadership, strengthening unity and promoting active youth participation in the Church and society.
