Goa, May 26, 2026: The church bells of Goa now ring with sorrow. Fr. Bolmax Pereira, the beloved parish priest of Chicalim and a fearless voice for justice and the environment, passed away on Tuesday after suffering a massive heart attack. He was only 50 years old.
For thousands across Goa, Fr. Bolmax was not just a priest standing at the altar. He was a shepherd who walked beside his people, fought for the voiceless, defended Goa’s fragile environment, and inspired an entire generation with his courage and compassion.
The tragic incident began when he collapsed at Vasco railway station while preparing to travel with parishioners for a picnic to Collem. He was initially revived and rushed for treatment before being shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital for advanced care.
Friends and parishioners remained hopeful after reports said he had shown signs of recovery and was even interacting with visitors at the hospital. But later that night, his condition suddenly worsened after another severe cardiac arrest. Doctors placed him on life support as prayers poured in from across Goa and beyond.
Despite every effort to save him, Fr. Bolmax breathed his last in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Fr. Bolmax Fidelis Pereira, Ph.D., was widely respected not only for his priestly ministry but also for his deep commitment to environmental protection, education, and social justice.
He researched the Sustainable Management of Wetlands of Goa and served as Assistant Professor of Botany at St. Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim, Goa. Alongside his academic contributions, he dedicated his life to pastoral service and community empowerment.
At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Parish Priest of St. Francis Xavier Church, Chicalim, Goa. Over the years, he also faithfully served the parishes of Fatorda, Loutolim, Mapusa, Agassaim, and Nerul.
Fr Bolmax became one of the strongest voices opposing projects that threatened Goa’s ecology, including the controversial railway double-tracking works and the destruction of forests in Mollem. For many young Goans, he symbolised courage — a priest unafraid to stand for truth, even when it was difficult.
An ardent environmental lover and activist, he mentored the Chicalim Youth Farmers Club and was actively associated with the Chicalim Bio Crusaders. He also played a major role as mentor, motivator, and member of the #SaveMollem campaign, which became one of Goa’s most powerful environmental movements.
His contribution to environmental education was equally remarkable. Fr Bolmax served as a resource faculty member and adjudicator for various environmental education initiatives, including the Children’s Science Congress, National Green Corps, Wipro Earthian Sustainability Program, and awareness programs conducted by the Goa State Council for Science and Technology.
Fr. Bolmax’s tireless efforts for ecology and biodiversity earned him several recognitions and awards. He was honoured with:
As parish priest at St. Francis Xavier Church in Chicalim, he touched countless lives through his simplicity, kindness, and deep love for the community. Parishioners remember him as approachable, joyful, and deeply committed to the suffering and struggles of ordinary people.
Since news of his passing emerged, tributes have flooded social media, churches, and community groups. Many described him as “a people’s priest” and “a protector of Goa”.
For the faithful who gathered outside the hospital praying for a miracle, the grief now feels deeply personal. Goa has not merely lost a priest — it has lost a compassionate leader, a fearless activist, an educator, and a spiritual father who spent his life serving others.
Though Fr. Bolmax Pereira’s earthly journey has ended, the values he stood for continue to inspire countless people across Goa. His fight for justice, care for creation, and love for humanity will not be forgotten.
In a world often driven by power and silence, he chose courage and service. And perhaps that is why his passing hurts so deeply — because men like him are rare.
As Goa mourns, many will remember him not only for the causes he fought for, but for the hope he gave to ordinary people every single day.
