Old Goa, April 14, 2026: Declaring the digital sphere a “providential space for mission,” Archbishop Varghese Chakkalackal Of Calicut called on diocesan priests across India to embrace their role as “digital shepherds,” guiding souls in emerging spaces with discernment, integrity and pastoral zeal. His message set the tone for the inaugural ceremony of the Annual Gathering of the Conference of the Diocesan Priests of India (CDPI) held in Old Goa.
In his presidential address, the Archbishop emphasised that the digital world is not outside God’s plan but “a part of His providential design,” offering both blessings and opportunities for evangelisation. “Christ is present in the digital world,” he said, urging clergy to recognise digital platforms as a “new pulpit” that extends the Church’s reach to the peripheries. At the same time, he cautioned against the misuse of technology for self-promotion, reminding priests that while technology can create connections, “it is the shepherd’s heart that transforms connection into communion and transformation.”
The inaugural ceremony began with the traditional lighting of the lamp by Cardinal Philip Neri Ferrao of Goa, Archbishop Varghese Chakkalackal, Fr. Stephen Alathara, Fr. Charles Leon and Fr. Suresh Mathew, symbolising the illumination of minds and hearts for the Church’s mission in contemporary times.
Welcoming the participants, Fr. Roy Lazar highlighted the importance of collective reflection among diocesan clergy, while Fr. Charles Leon presented a brief overview of the previous gathering, setting the context for the ongoing deliberations.
In his inaugural address, Cardinal Philip Neri expanded on the pastoral vision by outlining three biblical models of leadership for priests today. Drawing from the image of the Good Shepherd in the Gospel of John, he described pastoral leadership as caring and relational. He further pointed to Christ’s encounters with individuals such as the Samaritan woman and Zacchaeus as examples of transformative leadership rooted in compassion.
The Cardinal also reflected on stewardship as responsible leadership—where priests act not as “bosses” but as custodians and instruments of reconciliation. Finally, he underscored the call to servant leadership, echoing Christ’s command to “wash the feet” and serve with humility, describing the Church as a “field hospital” that reaches out to heal and accompany.
Offering felicitations, Fr. Stephen Alathara encouraged priests to remain updated in the digital realm in order to effectively engage with the younger generation, particularly Gen Z. Echoing this sentiment, Fr Henry Falco, the Director of the St Joseph Vaz centre Goa invited participants to “develop a digital heart,” one that integrates technological competence with pastoral sensitivity.
The gathering marks a significant moment of reflection for diocesan priests in India, as they discern how best to carry forward their mission in an increasingly digital and interconn
ected world.
