Empowered Voices, Stronger Communities: Women Lead Change in Bhagalpur Diocese

Bhagalpur, April 14, 2026 — In the far-flung villages and hilly terrains of the Bhagalpur diocese, a quiet yet resolute movement is taking shape—one led by women who are emerging as agents of transformation within their communities.

Spearheaded by the diocesan Commission for Women, a structured capacity-building initiative has, over the past year, significantly strengthened grassroots leadership among women. The programme, launched in March 2025 in collaboration with a Regional Resource Team from the Bihar Region and the national leadership of the women’s commission under the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India, has steadily expanded both in reach and impact.

Responding to the pastoral vision of Bishop Kurien Valiakandathil, the initiative initially trained 22 women drawn from 11 deaneries—more than double the originally planned number. These women, many from remote and underserved regions, have since become catalysts of change in their local contexts.

The fruits of this formation have been evident. Throughout 2025, nine of the eleven deaneries consistently documented their outreach efforts, with evaluation reports indicating notable growth in leadership confidence and community engagement. This progress was further consolidated during the second phase of national-level training in 2026.

Building on this momentum, the programme has now doubled its cadre of trained leaders, ensuring that each deanery is supported by four women leaders. The focus of formation has evolved from fostering self-awareness and dignity among Catholic women to equipping them with the tools to address complex social realities. Participants are guided to navigate their roles within family and society, promoting healthier relationships and stronger community bonds.

A strategic shift in 2026 has further deepened the programme’s effectiveness. Moving away from earlier exchange-based training across deaneries, the initiative now prioritises localised engagement. Women leaders conduct sessions within their own deaneries, travelling to parishes to organise one-day seminars on pressing issues such as gender sensitisation and gender-based violence.

Despite the demanding conditions—often involving travel of up to nine hours across difficult terrain—the commitment of these women remains unwavering. Their sustained efforts are fostering a network of solidarity that transcends geographical and social barriers.

Today, the impact is visible in the emergence of a more connected and resilient community of women. Better informed and more confident, they are increasingly able to articulate their concerns, respond to situations of injustice, and stand together in moments of adversity.

As the Church in Bhagalpur continues its mission of social and pastoral outreach, this growing movement of empowered women stands as a testament to the transformative power of faith, formation, and collective action.
