Hyderabad, April 21, 2026: Calling for a responsible and mission-oriented use of digital platforms, Bishop Rayarala Vijaya Kumar of Srikakulam urged Church communicators to become “authentic witnesses of the Gospel” in the digital world, highlighting the profound influence of social media on faith, values, and the lives of young people.
The bishop was addressing the National Consultation of Communicators organised by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India Office for Social Communications at St. John’s Regional Seminary from April 19 to 21. The consultation, held in collaboration with NISCORT, brought together Regional Secretaries for Social Communications representing 174 dioceses across the country.
In his inaugural address, Bishop Vijaya Kumar emphasised the transformative power of social communication in today’s digital age, noting that it plays a decisive role not only in society but also in shaping faith experiences within the Church. He pointed out that digital media significantly influences how young people perceive values, relationships, and spirituality, making it an essential space for evangelisation.
Reiterating his message during the consultation, the bishop stressed the need for communicators to use social media with wisdom and ethical responsibility. He cautioned against misuse and called for integrity, credibility, and a deep sense of mission in all forms of digital engagement.
Centred on the theme “Using Technology and Social Communication in the Field of Evangelisation,” the three-day consultation featured input sessions, group discussions, and experience-sharing. Participants reflected on pastoral challenges, exchanged best practices, and explored innovative approaches to strengthening communication strategies in their respective regions.
The gathering concluded with a renewed commitment among Church communicators to harness technology more effectively in service of evangelisation, guided by Gospel values and a spirit of collaboration.
