Bhopal, August 20, 2024: In a heartwarming display of forgiveness, Sr. Selmi, a Franciscan Clarist nun, tied a sacred rakhi thread on the wrist of Samundar Singh, a former convict who had murdered Sr. Rani Maria, a Catholic nun, in 1995.
Every year, Sr. Selmi, sister of Blessed Rani Maria tenderly ties the sacred rakhi thread on the hands of Samundar Singh, as their bond of love and protection continues to flourish.
Samundar Singh embarked on a laborious five-hour journey yesterday by bike from His ancestral village to Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh to meet Sr. Selmi, traversing vast distances to reach her.
Love Conquers Hate
The Rakhi thread represents the triumph of love over hatred and violence. In a world plagued by darkness and evil, this gesture shines as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that even the most heinous crimes can be forgiven.
It also signifies an unbreakable bond between Sr. Selmi and Samundar Singh, one built on forgiveness, love and protection. This bond transcends the conventional boundaries of victim and perpetrator, showcasing the power of human connection.
This remarkable act serves as a powerful testimony to the faith and compassion of Sr. Selmi and the Catholic community. It demonstrates that forgiveness is not only a religious tenet but a lived reality, inspiring us to embrace these values in our own lives
Role of Swami Sadanand
Swami Sadanand, a CMI (Carmelites of Mary Immaculate) priest, played a pivotal role in transforming the life of Samundar Singh, the convicted murderer of Sr. Rani Maria.
Through his selfless efforts and compassionate ministry, Swami Sadanand guided Singh from a path of darkness to one of love.
Swami Sadanand's journey with Singh began in prison, where he provided spiritual guidance and counseling. With empathy and understanding, the priest helped Singh confront his past actions and seek forgiveness. This marked the beginning of Singh's transformation, as he slowly began to acknowledge the gravity of his mistakes.
Swami Sadanand encouraged Singh to seek forgiveness from the family of Sr. Rani Maria. This courageous step facilitated a process of healing and reconciliation, allowing Singh to confront the pain he had caused. The priest's gentle prodding helped Singh to take responsibility for his actions and make amends.
Swami Sadanand arranged meetings between Singh and Sr. Selmi, a member of the same religious order as Sr. Rani Maria. These meetings culminated in the symbolic tying of the Rakhi thread, representing a bond of forgiveness, love, and protection.
Swami Sadanand supported Singh's rehabilitation, helping him to reintegrate into society as a reformed individual. With the priest's guidance, Singh committed to spreading love and forgiveness, using his experiences to help others. This remarkable story is a testament to the power of second chances.
