Twin Brothers, 70 Years of Priesthood, One Lifelong Mission

Dublin, May 25, 2026: In an age when lifelong commitments are becoming increasingly rare, two elderly Irish priests have quietly offered the world a powerful witness of faithfulness, joy and endurance.

Fr Joe Kelly and Fr Matt Kelly — twin brothers from County Kildare — recently celebrated not only their 95th birthday, but also an extraordinary milestone that few priests in history ever reach: 70 years of priesthood.

Their remarkable journey was honoured at a special Mass in Bayside, Dublin, led by Archbishop Dermot Farrell, alongside Bishop Denis Nulty and other clergy, drawing together parishioners, family and friends to celebrate two lives devoted entirely to God and His people.

Twin Brothers, One Extraordinary Calling

Born on 31 March 1931 in Coolcarrigan, Co. Kildare, the Kelly twins grew up in a faith-filled family where service, discipline and community shaped their lives from an early age.

Although inseparable as boys, their paths briefly diverged when the local bishop decided the twins should study separately for the priesthood. Fr Joe entered Clonliffe College in Dublin, while Fr Matt attended Maynooth Seminary.

Yet providence eventually reunited them. Three years later, Fr Joe joined his brother in Maynooth, where both continued their formation before being ordained just weeks apart in 1956.

Seventy years later, their shared vocation remains one of the most beautiful examples of priestly brotherhood in Ireland.

Seven Decades of Service

Throughout their ministries, both priests touched countless lives in very different ways.

Fr Joe faithfully served across the Archdiocese of Dublin, ministering in Finglas, Whitehall, Santry and Bayside, where he remained active well into his nineties.

Fr Matt dedicated many years to teaching philosophy at Carlow College Seminary before serving in several parishes, including Kildare Town and Kill/Ardclough. Beyond parish life, he also became deeply involved in sacred music and choir ministry.

Despite their age, both priests continued active ministry long after most would have retired. Their dedication became a quiet testimony to perseverance and love for the Church.

The Secret Behind Their Longevity

The brothers themselves credit much of their health and happiness to staying active and maintaining a sense of humour.

Both were enthusiastic golfers and football lovers for much of their lives. Fr Joe once jokingly remarked, “When you’re not able to play football, you play golf.”

Today, the twins reside together at the Little Sisters of the Poor residence in Raheny, Dublin — still sharing memories, laughter and the bond that has defined their remarkable lives.

A Witness the Modern World Needs

At a time when many people struggle with commitment, the story of Fr Joe and Fr Matt Kelly stands as a reminder that a life given fully to God is never wasted.

For seventy years, these twin brothers baptised children, comforted the grieving, celebrated the Eucharist and quietly carried Christ into the lives of thousands.

Their platinum jubilee is more than a celebration of years.

It is a celebration of faithfulness — lived humbly, joyfully and together.
