Prayagraj, U.P., August 25, 2025 – The Roman Catholic Diocese of Allahabad organised a one-day seminar-cum-training programme for altar servers of the diocese on August 24, 2025, at St. Joseph’s College, Prayagraj. 198 altar boys and girls from 20 parishes across the diocese participated in the event, which included sessions on liturgical practices, spiritual formation, and a solemn Eucharistic celebration. The event was held to educate young participants in the spirituality and service of St. John Berchmans, the patron saint of altar servers.
The programme commenced with a formal inauguration featuring a prayer song, lamp-lighting ceremony, and the welcome of dignitaries and resource persons. In his inaugural address, Bishop Louis Mascarenhas, Bishop of the Allahabad Diocese, congratulated the participants of the programme and urged them to serve with faith, reverence, and enthusiasm at the altar of the Lord. Distinguished guests present at the function included Msgr. Reginald D’Souza (Vicar General of Allahabad Diocese), Fr. Isidore D’Souza (Chancellor of Allahabad Diocese), Fr. Walter D’Silva (Principal, St. Joseph’s College, Prayagraj), and Fr. Vipin D’Souza (Director, Nazareth Hospital, Prayagraj), along with zonal priests, religious sisters, and lay animators.
Rev. Fr. Stany Wilfred D’Souza led the first session of the programme, illustrating the sanctity of the altar and the symbolism of sacred vessels and articles through practical demonstrations. The highlight of the day was the Eucharistic celebration at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, which coincided with the Second Episcopal Ordination Anniversary of Bishop Louis Mascarenhas. During the Mass, the altar servers took a pledge of service and received medallions as symbols of their dedication.
In the second session of the day, Rev. Fr. Leo Sequeira focused on the spirituality of altar servers, using biblical references and emphasising three key symbols—the Bible, the Cross, and the Rosary. He also offered reflections on the life of St. John Berchmans in an engaging, interactive format.
The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates to all the participants, marking the end of a formative and spiritually enriching day for the Diocese’s young altar servers.
